App Store Design and Spam Risk Guide¶
Use this page before submission or resubmission when the question is whether app similarity, template reuse, or portfolio duplication is creating obvious 4.3 risk.
This is the broad guide for pre-submit spam and duplication risk.
If Apple has already cited Guideline 4.3, use Guideline 4.3 Spam for the concrete rejection path.
What This Guide Covers¶
Use this page to check:
- whether multiple apps are too similar in workflow or end-user value
- whether template reuse is visible enough to create spam risk
- whether the app family should be consolidated before the next submission
- whether the next build should proceed at all under the current portfolio structure
1. Structural Spam (Guideline 4.3)¶
Apple audits for apps that don't offer a unique or high-quality experience. - Spam Policy Violation: The core 4.3 rejection. Often triggered when a developer submits multiple apps that are nearly identical (e.g., different skins for the same utility). - Repetitive Submissions: Submitting the same app under different categories or names to "flood" the store results in 4.3 rejections and potential developer account termination.
2. Low-Value & Template Apps¶
- Template Rejections: If your app looks like a "container" for a website or uses a widely available commercial template with minimal changes, it may be rejected for lacking "Minimum Functionality" (Guideline 4.2) often mixed with 4.3.
- Utility & Depth: Ensure your app provides a localized, native experience that goes beyond what a mobile website can offer.
3. Pre-Submit Portfolio Checks¶
- Consolidate obvious duplicates: If multiple apps are serving the same user job, verify whether they should remain separate before the next submission.
- Check visible originality: Confirm the app shows clear user-facing differences rather than template reuse with minor branding changes.
- Check product depth: Confirm the build demonstrates real native utility rather than a thin container or repetitive variant.
