IngramSpark Color & Image Guide: CMYK, Resolution & Profiles

Quick Answer

IngramSpark flags files when print geometry, color, bleed, font embedding, or metadata requirements fail prepress validation.

IngramSpark uses high-precision industrial inkjet and toner-based printers. Unlike desktop printers or standard digital screens, these machines require strict adherence to professional color spaces and image quality standards.

1. CMYK Color Space Requirements

IngramSpark requires all files (Interior and Cover) to be submitted in the CMYK color space. - CMYK Warning: RGB files will be automatically flagged. While Ingram's system can convert RGB to CMYK, the resulting color shift—especially in vibrant blues, greens, and blacks—can be significant. - Total Ink Limit: Ensure your rich blacks do not exceed 240% total ink coverage (C+M+Y+K). High ink density causes "tackiness" and smudging during the binding process.

2. Image Resolution & Quality

  • Image Resolution: Every image in your PDF must be 300 DPI at the size it will be printed. Scaling up a 72 DPI web image will trigger an automatic "Low Resolution" rejection.
  • Embedded Images: Images must be correctly linked and embedded in the PDF export. Missing "OPI" links or low-resolution proxies will cause the print to appear blurry or pixelated.

3. Color Profile Conflicts

  • Color Profile Error: IngramSpark recommends using GRACoL 2006 or SWOP 2006 profiles. Embedding conflicting ICC profiles (like ProPhoto RGB or custom monitor profiles) can cause the system to misinterpret color data.
  • Best Practice: Export your PDF using the PDF/X-1a:2001 standard, which forces CMYK conversion and flattens transparency.

4. Recovery Strategy

  1. Check Your Source: In InDesign or Affinity Publisher, ensure your Document Setup is set to "CMYK" before starting the design.
  2. Pre-flight in Acrobat: Use Adobe Acrobat Pro's "Preflight" tool to find any images below 300 DPI or any objects still in RGB.
  3. Re-export: Use professional presets. Avoid "Export to PDF" from Microsoft Word or Canva if you need precise color control.
