Amazon KDP Geometry & Layout Guide: Bleed, Trim & Margins¶
Quick Answer¶
Amazon KDP enforces publishing validation when manuscript, cover, formatting, bleed, or metadata checks do not meet print and policy requirements.
Amazon KDP's automated review system checks the physical dimensions of your manuscript PDF against the trim size and bleed settings selected in your title setup. Most rejections in this category are due to small deviations in page size or text placement.
1. Bleed Settings & Requirements¶
Bleed is required if you want images or backgrounds to reach the very edge of the page. - Bleed Warning: Occurs when elements are intended to bleed but don't extend the required 0.125" (3mm) beyond the trim line. - Bleed Precheck: Ensure your PDF page size includes the extra 0.125" on the top, bottom, and outer edges (but not the gutter).
2. Trim Size & Page Dimensions¶
- Manuscript Trim Size: Your PDF page size must match the trim size exactly. For a 6" x 9" book with bleed, the PDF page size must be 6.125" x 9.25".
- Consistency: If your title setup says 6" x 9" but your PDF is 8.5" x 11", the file will be rejected immediately.
3. Margin & Safe Zone Violations¶
- Margin Precheck: All text and "essential" images must be inside the safe zone. This is typically 0.25" from the trim edge.
- Gutter Margin: The inner margin must increase as your page count grows to ensure text doesn't get lost in the binding.
- Gutter Margin Precheck: Double-check your "Inside Margin" settings based on KDP's page count tables.
4. Recovery Strategy¶
- Use Professional Templates: Download a KDP-specific template for your exact trim size and page count.
- Flatten Your PDF: Export as PDF/X-1a to ensure all elements are locked in place.
- Check the Previewer: Use the KDP online Previewer tool to look for "red lines" indicating margin or bleed errors.
